Edward L. Squires received the 2005 “Horse Person of the Year” award presented by the Colorado Horse Council at the 2006 Rocky Mountain Horse Expo. Professor Squires was honored just prior to the Friday evening program featuring Clinton Anderson on March 10, 2006. The award has been presented each year for 24 years beginning in 1981 to a person who has made significant contributions to the equine industry.
“This year’s recipient certainly fills that bill,” according to Chris Whitney, Colorado Horse Council President, who presented the award. Whitney added that Dr. Squires is a scientist, visionary, educator and mentor and that his many contributions of expertise, experience, time, judgement and funds have been instrumental in vaulting the equine programs of Colorado State University to among the best in the world. “The Colorado Horse Council is honored and privileged to make him our Horse Person of the Year for 2005,” stated Whitney. Whitney cited the following as evidence of Dr. Squires’ contributions and achievements: Dr. Squires is a professor in “transitional retirement” in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University. He is a renowned lecturer and author, having authored 15 books and over 100 articles. He was instrumental in the creation of the Colorado Horsemen’s Seminar at CSU and lectured at this event for 15 years. And, he has been a featured speaker at the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo from its beginnings in 1994 through the present. At CSU, Dr. Squires served as supervisor of the Equine Reproduction Laboratory, where he pioneered the development of embryo transfer techniques and conducted ground breaking research in reproductive endocrinology, hormonal regulation and stallion semen preservation.
