The Board of the Colorado Horse Council has adopted the position of opposing the H.R. 503 and S. 311, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act due to its failure to make adequate provisions for the unwanted horses that will be impacted by the legislation.
The CHC board holds with the position of the American Association of Equine Practitioners and the American Veterinary Medical Association that prior to legislation being adopted to ban the practice of equine slaughter, alternatives for unwanted equines must have enough capacity to accommodate the animals currently being sold for processing to avoid the predictable and unintentional consequences of these animals being neglected and abandoned.

For more information on the topic and to learn what you can do to help unwanted horses, and to help increase alternatives to equine slaughter please visit the Unwanted Horse Coalition website at www.unwantedhorsecoalition.org.
