Important Information for Horse Owners in Colorado

The Colorado State Veterinarian’s Office is monitoring an outbreak of Equine Herpes Virus (EHV)/Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy (EHM) linked to barrel racing and rodeo events in Texas and Oklahoma (Nov. 5–9). Several cases, including deaths, have been confirmed in those states.
No confirmed cases in Colorado at this time.
For Horse Owners:
- Contact CDA at 303-869-9130 if your horses attended affected events.
- Isolate exposed horses for 21 days.
- Monitor twice daily for elevated temperature (>101.5°F), respiratory signs, and neurologic symptoms.
- Keep a log and notify your veterinarian immediately if symptoms appear.

For Event Organizers:
- Consult your veterinarian before hosting events.
- Consider postponement or cancellation.
- If events proceed, require recent health certificates and implement strict biosecurity measures.
For Veterinarians:
- Contact CDA immediately for horses showing acute neurologic disease.
- Collect paired nasal swab and whole blood samples for accurate diagnosis.
Biosecurity Reminder:
EHV spreads through nasal secretions, contaminated surfaces, and human contact. Thorough cleaning, disinfection, and isolation are essential.
